Phoenicia Lodge is retro fun in the Catskills

Phoenicia Lodge has been on our  Mid-Century Motel directory for a long time – so when we planned a trip through upstate New York, we knew we had to stop and meet up with Brian and Sara who have lovingly restored and cultivated a fabulous Lodge in the gorgeous Catskills!

The town of Phoenicia is small and quaint and a lot of fun. We had dinner at Tavern 214, an excellent restaurant there,  and enjoyed walking around the cute stores in the small downtown.

As far as the Lodge goes, the cabins are adorable…each with their own personalities yet showing a respect and knowledge of 1950’s details.

Eight years ago, Brian and Sara, two Brooklynites, stumbled upon an old roadside lodge where the paint had faded, the floors were cracked, and most of the toilets rocked from side to side, but they were able to see the honest simplicity in the humble cabins that appealed to their desire for a simpler life.

Shortly thereafter, the Phoenicia Lodge was born. The Lodge uses period-specific furniture and fixtures to marry mid-century style with modern amenities like air conditioning, Wi-Fi, free DVD rentals and eco-conscious products.  They also offer a free continental breakfast and welcome dogs!

True to it’s Mid-Century roots, the Phoenicia Lodge has been restored to marry the spirit of the past with the comfort and convenience of today.

The rooms, cottages and suites are located in a wooded valley within Catskill State Park between Route 28 and the Esopus Creek, surrounded by the gorgeous Catskill Mountains and just around the corner from Main Street Phoenicia’s fantastic shops and restaurants. All of this is just 2-1/2 hours from New York City, so the majority of guests are city escapees for the weekend.

“It’s been a complex project to undertake”, says co-owner Sara Loughlin, “We were new to inn-keeping so of course we had a huge learning curve to conquer initially. It’s a challenging business but it’s also very satisfying when our guests are happy. Between the number of repeat guests we see, plus the great online reviews people have given us, we’re so gratified to be able deliver what people want. We’re their cozy, comfortable home-away-from-home.”

The couple has gone to a lot of trouble to bring all the comforts of home (including a supply of DVD’s in the office) as well as the comforts of a cute 1950’s cabins. The area has been planted with great tress and flowers and you can tell Brian and Sara consider this their home as much as a place for someone to enjoy an evening. I know their visitors request the same cabins and feel as much as home as the owners do!

Complimentary coffee, tea, yummy muffins, fruit, bagels, yogurt and breakfast snacks are available in the office in the mornings after 8 am.

My husband and I just took to a weekend getaway to Phoenicia (with our two dogs) last month and stayed at the Phoenicia Lodge. It was so great. They had everything we needed. We grilled out one night. We laid in the hammock. We sat by the fire. Our cabin was cute and clean and comfortable. It was a great experience, and we’ll be back again.
